Background info: Last night I was doing some laundry and my washing machine started smoking really bad and refused to work, I was pretty much out of clean clothes and didn't even get the first load done so I was pretty upset. I called maintenance for my complex this morning and they came out and told me that my washer was dead and that it would take 2 weeks to get a new once in! I REALLY don't have time to go to a laundromat and do my laundry so I was a little distraught at the prospect of not having a washer for 2 weeks.

One of the maintenance workers saw that I'd run cat5 in my apartment and dropped it down through the conduits while he was cleaning the dryer duct and asked if I was good with computers. Normally I just lie so I don't get pulled into doing a bunch of free work for people but it was early in the morning and I guess I was still a little groggy so I told him that I run an IT consulting firm, so naturally he asked if I could fix his computer because it wouldn't connect to the Internet. He seemed like a nice guy so I said I'd take a look at it. He'd already taken it to two shops who told him that the only thing they could do for him was to put XP on it to replace ME, they wanted to charge him $250!

Anyways I get it up on the bench and find out the problem is just an inordinate amount of spyware, so I get spybot running on it and get a little bit of work done, then rebooted all is well, so I hand it back to the guy and he asks me if he owes me anything and I just said, anything you can do to speed along the process on the washer will be appreciated.

My new washer AND dryer are being installed now :D

Cliffs:
Washing machine broke last night
maintenance said it would take 2 weeks to get a new one
I fix maintenance guys computer and have a new washer and dryer being installed less than 4 hours after they came out :D

That's pretty much the way the world works. My strategy is to do as many nice things for people as I can, so if I need a favor I can pursue it through multiple sources.

o rly?

cause I was nice and I agreed to drive a guy from work who lives in my town to work every morning. He told me this morning that he'll pay me at the end of each week. I'm not sure if he really will cause he kinda casually mentioned it. I have a tendency of being too nice to people and unknowingly letting them take advantage of me. So....we'll see if MY kindess pays once Friday comes. hehehe.

Letting people walk all over you means you're a sucker.

Don't you watch Judge Judy?

I have the same problem. Once I realize that they are taking advantage of the situation I usually just stop though.

But what are you going to do now that he knows you have an IT background, and asks for more help sometime down the line.

shens on your claim you REALLY don't have time to go to a laundromat and/or drop it off and have it washed by the pound.

I was thinking the self serve laundromats, didn't really think to take it by dry cleaners type place

Didn't think that far down the line! :)
