Something's dying in here; help me figure out what

I'm running the setup in my sig, except the MB is now an older Gigabyte P965-DS3 and CPU is not OC'd (stock Q6600 @ 2.4GHz).

I've narrowed it down to a few possibilities; read on, please.

My CPU used to be OC'd but is not anymore b/c the GB board won't overclock for squat. Everything in the system is at stock speeds (horrible, I know!) *edit* I should add that the CPU was running at stock speeds in the "new" MB for more than a month before this prob started. I really don't think it's the CPU.

A few weeks ago I started having random crashes/lockups in games that had previously been running fine. I immediately check GPU temps and they were not any higher than they've always been since I've owned it. These lockups/crashes happened in more than one game, so it's not game-specific-patch related. I reloaded the latest GPU driver, DirectX, blah, blah. Didn't help. 3DMark won't even run...just hangs while loading the first test.

Couple of weeks go by, the problem gets worse. Games crash 50% of the time and now sometimes the BIOS screens are discolored/snowy/all messed up. Sometimes the system will just lock up at the desktop with everything all discolored.

IMO, it's either my video card (doubtful...1.5 years old, never OC'd), PS (possible...3 years old 620W running a monster system) or the MB itself...maybe the PCI-E slot is dying? My case is well ventilated and sparkly clean inside.

I'm leaning toward the PS or the MB. The Corsair HX620 is a solid PS but it's been beat on for about 3 years. I have a Corsair HX1000 PS that I can take out of my video editing box, so that's good. I have an 8800GT that box too that I can use...that's good but NOT good compared to gaming w/a 4870X2. So my gaming box won't be down...just not any fun.

What do you guys think? All my stuff is rackmount so swapping out PS's/GPUs is not a 5-minute affair. THANKS in advance for your help and ideas.

Mike

I agree with you, but I think the only way to tell is by swapping components. I'd start with RAM(easy to test, leave in place), then swap gfx card, then PSU, then assume it's the mb.

OK, MEMTEST it is. W7 comes with MEMTEST right on the DVD. 1 quick pass should be about an hour. I can run that now. Thanks, lxskllr.

OK, I'm posting from Safe Mode. I tried to restart the machine to run Memtest. Guess what? Couldn't get past the BIOS post screens covered in snow with ripped and torn up pixelated letters. It HAD to be the video card.

Unable to start in Safe Mode to uninstall the ATI card, I just swapped in an NVidia 7900GTO and booted up. Perfect boot the first time. :hmm: I'm in Safe Mode now downloading the latest NVidia drivers. The ATI Catalyst Uninstaller will not run in Safe Mode (just tried twice) so I'm going to have to take my chances with BSODs upon reload. I'll get it sorted out though.

In considering which GPU to swap in, I had three video cards to choose from:

ATI HD2600XT - very low power draw card, doesn't use additional PS connectors...low video performance (gaming) too

NVidia 8800GT - nice card, puts a load on the PS but would involve dismantling another PC...ah nope.

NVidia 7900GTO - not as powerful as the 8800GT but pulls more juice...I chose this one. You can see why, right? To strain the PS. I want to make sure it's not the PS. The 4870X2 is a power-hungry SOB...I'm trying to replicate it's draw as closely as possible.

I can tell you this though; perfect boot up the first time. No torn pixels, nothing amiss. I'm pretty sure it's the GPU. A frickin' $550 card when I bought it. Not happy right now. It's still under warranty though, so back it goes.

I'll update this thread when I'm SURE it was the GPU. TTYL.

It's the video card,

I am 99.999% confident it is.

can't you warranty your GPU? If you didn't OC it, they should honor their warranty.

I just finished running FurMark Stability Test, Extreme burning mode for 5 minutes. Not a crash, screen blink or anything weird. It's the GPU. I knew my trusty Corsair HX620 wouldn't fail me!!! ():) Just can't kill this thing....oh watch, now that I said that...

I bought this 4870X2 in August, 2008. The warranty is for two years, according to Sapphire (who insist you go thru your place of purchase for warranty service). So, I'm emailing Provantage.com now.

I played L4D2 last night for about 90 minutes. No more AA and I did miss it, but framerate was surprisingly good at 19x12 with this 7900GTO.

Hope to hear back from Provantage today. The 4870X2 isn't made anymore...I actually hope they offer me a decent sized credit towards another GPU. A 5970 comes to mind. :D
