Something wrong with my laptop drive in Ultra enclosure?

Hi all,

I have been wanting to use the eSata port on my new machine(and my Dell E6510 laptop) to run Vmware VMs from external drive. So I bought Samsung 500GB 7200 rpm laptop drive and putting it in Ultra enclosure (since it has both USB2 and eSata).

The enclosure also provide a separate USB cable to provide power to the enclosure. The documentation says that in general, extra power should not be required, except for high power drive. The external drive works fine, without using separate power cable, when I connect to laptop USB port( have not figured out how to enable eSata port on XP yet). But when I connect to the front USB port on my rosewill challenger case, the enclosure/drive makes a beeping sound and a clicking sound, with the blue led on enclosure flashing. the drive is not seen in the machine until I also connect the power-usb cable. Once I connect, the beeping goes away and the drive is usable.

My question: Is the Samsung drive needing too much power, or is the USB port on the Rosewill not having enough power? I was originally thinking of buying the WD Scorpio 500GB, but couldn't wait for delivery and got a good deal on samsung, plus many newegg reviews say the scorpio has some noise. Does the scorpio need less power? I am worried whether I may sometime get stuck in a situation with the Samsung where there might not be an extra USB port for power.

thanks.

More than likely the front ports of the case are not providing enough power to power the drive. I have had this happen with my antec case to and it will power the drive fine from the back usb on the board but not the front usb on the case

To be fully reliable, I always use a powered hub for these connections. Never a problem that way.
