something wrong with internet connection

I'm running win2k p3 700 512ram. All of a sudden today I kept losing my internet connection. I was still able to chat via irc, aim, icq... however when i closed any of those programs i could not reconnect. I am on cable modem in so cal with RR.

The only solution I found was to unplug my CM and wait a minute or two then plug it back in. But that is such a hassle of a solution. why is this happening and what could be a solution?

I remember trying that cable modem patch from speedguide, perhaps that is it? Just throwing things out for ideas.
