Im running Windows ME on an AMD system (KT133 chipset, Asus mobo).

As Im browsing around in IE6, everything will stop and my hard drive light will start flickering and making an "zzt zzt zzt [pause] zzt zzt zzt" noise.

It does this for maybe 10 to 20 seconds and then everything is fine again.

I've checked the ribbon cable connections... they seem secure. It definitely seems to be associated with IE6. Very strange.

Any ideas?

Do you have a CD in your CD drive? If so take it out and see if this happens again...

I know this sounds stupid but there is a method to my madness: IE allows you to search your pc locally as well as the internet and sometimes it will spin your cd up so it can access the info on it, thinking that's where you intend to "explore," and I'm willing to bet its your CD spiiing that you hear and not your HD...

I had that problem, its not just with IE though. I bet that you probably have a faultering HD (specifically the IBM 75GXP drive) based on the sounds it makes, mine did the same. This model HD is prone to failure and that is why I got rid of mine. I suggest you do some more research about this 75GXP problem.

well he didn't say anything about his hard drive but I'm guessing it could be something like a hard drive problem (specifically a IBM 75GXP model problem)
