Something to watch out for with memtest86 and your CPU

I was testing out a laptop this morning which (unknown to me) had a load of dusty crap in the CPU HSF. The fan was able to spin but obviously wasn't cooling the processor properly. The test took loads longer than what I would expect (20 minutes to get halfway through with the HSF clogged up, and 15 minutes to complete all the tests once after the HSF was cleaned) - the processor was clocking itself down so it wouldn't overheat.

It reminds me of a test that I think tomshardware did on Athlon XPs which would melt if you removed the HSF while the system was running (obviously not a wise thing to do, but bear with me), whereas the Pentium 4 would clock itself down to a speed where it wouldn't overheat under load.

Hopefully nothing was damaged from excessive heat. A proper laptop cleaning is usually necessary after a few years, but it's really a pain in the balls.
