Something stuck in my eye all day, how to get it out?

Did some woodworking last night, used safety glasses etc, but guess I did not brush my hair out properly and a spec of saw dust probably got in my eyes overnight and this morning I had something in my eye and it's been there since. It just wont come out. Had to work at 7pm so could not go to ER as I had a lot of stuff to do. Thinking of going to ER at the end of my shift, and 7am is probably a good time to go as there wont be lot of people. Is there even anything they can do? I tried eye drops, eye wash station here at work, just can't get rid of it. Sometimes it feels like it's gone, then I start feeling it again. I've avoided playing too much with it as I don't want to risk damaging my eyes like scratching cornea or something. Been trying to make my eye cry, no go, it just wont come out.

I'm guessing whatever is in there is probably pretty far in, anything else I can try, and will ER even be able to do anything? I don't want to do anything drastic like have the eye taken out of the socket or anything but obviously if this thing stays in there much longer it could become problematic I imagine.

and people say they have no use for knives... :shakeshead:

Since you're too wimpy to carry a knife, try rinsing with water. A shotglass makes it easy. You may not have anything in your eye at all. A scratched lens feels like something in your eye.

When extracting the eyeball, be very careful not to penetrate beyond the optic nerve (as this is dangerously close to the brain's visual cortex).

I think a pair of pliers would probably do it. Might need some paper towels for the cleanup afterwards.

There might not be anything there anymore, but if it scratched anything, it'll feel like it's still there for....I don't know, maybe a day or so. Minor damage there can heal quickly. But, it might not be a bad idea to check with an eye doctor.

Are you able to see anything there, or does it just feel like it?

Can't see anything, but typically stuff like that is probably way behind anyway otherwise it would just fall out. I guess I'll just have to get it checked out to be safe, they'll have the right equipment to check properly anyway.

I'm starting to think it might be gone though and I'm still feeling something, as it's not super irritating just enough to feel something.

I think I got it out now. At least, I can't feel it any more. Well that saves me a trip to the ER, did not really want to do that considering this is my first night shift so it's not like I can skip sleeping.

THIS. This has happened to me many times before. If you dont see anything in your eyes after checking the mirror, it is gone. If you rubbed to hard, you most likely scrathed ur eye so it just feels like something is there. Usually feels better after i wake up from a nights rest. Im thinking leaving ur eyes closed helps it heal.

What often happens is a very small piece of sawdust gets stuck in the soft tissue under the eyelid rinsing won't always get it out. I use a piece of twisted tissue paper and wipe under the eyelid with it. It's annoying as hell to do, but often works.

As an eye doc I highly recommend you get it checked out by an ophthalmologist as soon as possible....you dont want any kind of remaining vegetable matter in your eye as a fungal infection could set in and cost you your eye. Seen it happen more than you'd think...

Coincidentally I actually have a 1 year post LASIK checkup in a couple days, so I'll definitely mention and they can check it out. Not something I want to mess around with.

Out of curiosity, does your Canadian national health plan pay for LASIK or is it private pay?

No LASIK is not covered, it's an elective surgery.

Well it looks like it came back. Woke up with that feeling again. I did notice I have an eye lash in my eye but I can't seem to get it out, I'm worried it will scratch the surface and I'm probably doing more damage the more I try to play with it. No idea if that's actually what I'm feeling, or just a side effect of trying to get this thing out.

My eye appointment could not be sooner, I really want to get this checked and fixed once and for all, but it's hard when working night shifts as I need to sleep in the day.
