Quick system specs

MSI K8N NEO2 platinum using modded bios 1.36 but I have the problem with the offical 1.4
FX-55 @ 1.45-1.55V
Corsair 1GB 3200XLPT @ 3-3-3-8

I'v been having problems running at 11x270+, so Iv started to try to find out if its my ram or the cpu...

Anyways, right now Im running 10x270 @ 1.45vcore. MEM timings are at 3-3-3-8 using 2.65V

When I run prime95's torture test and pick either In-place large FFT or Blend I start to hear a very low high pitch sound as soon as the test starts.

I can't tell if its coming from the cpu, ram, or the motherboard. At the moment I believe its the ram, there are times during the test that it almost sounds like a HD seeking but no where near as loud as a real HD.

Iv also noticed the sound when I try to load/access a program after running a memory sucking program such as a game. Or, I run prime95 for a few mins and then bring restore mozilla, I can hear this sound as mozilla gets loaded back into memory.

If it is my ram I take it this is not normal? Is there something I can try to single out where the noise is coming from?

electronics can make sounds ...capacitor and inductors ..... mostly, correct me if I am wrong. nothing to worry really. some times they come in low hum, others are high pitch.

I get whine when running prime ..I think it is ok ....only program that does that..although some have reported a whine with scrolling there mouse on this mobo....

in fact some hear whine from the mobo from capacitors or donut looking things at idle..there are a couple threads at extremesystems about this

But I get in Prime95..when I hear I know I am still going just fine...

This is the first time I have ever exp such a thing. I'v also come to find that the higher I overclock the worse it is.

yea.. I thought it seemed strange but it is the only program I have had this haappen...and given that over the last week I have run Prime 95 for 100 hrs with no ill effects I am not worried

oh, well prime95 isnt the only cause for me. Super Pi causes it but not as bad. I also hear it for a split sec while my computer is starting up, it happens right as my screen flashs off from showing the pci devices to showing the XP loading screen...

oh yea I forgot super pi will do this as well...I will occasionally hear whine after the initial boot and if I open core center...
with the exception of the noted apps..the whine seems to be otherwise gone

probably pushing those caps and power fets pretty hard :) they like to whine when they are pushed hard...lol....sometimes could just be the heat generated .......

Do you have a fan controller? Some boards come with fan controllers that can increase the speed of the fans and make more noise when the temp goes up.

My A64 3000+ Winchester did this whining also in the beginning. I jacked the voltage as far as possible on my K8N and ran P95 large FFTs for a while and the sound has finally gone.... I guess its just from breaking in on the smaller process (90nm)

I was also worried but read somewhere that the sound should go away after a while. :)

Yeah this is normal, probably you are hearing the MOSFETs. I know I hear em on my board, especially with the dual power system.

I've had this happen to me before. I traced it down to the HSF. It was resonating somehow. I removed it and re-installed it and the problem went away. This may not be your problem but it's worth a look.
