Something like Smart Folders but different

I am consolidating all of my data and I would like to have all of the data in one main folder, then have separate folders for organizing by type where I can drag and drop the folders/files from the main folder to some folder say (Videos, Games, etc) and it wouldn't copy it, but symlink it. So then I can easily find things in the organized folders, but still have all the data in one central repository of sorts.

Is this possible?
