Something like Ram Booster for Win7?

Yeah, so I'm a long time WinXP user and for XP I had (still have somewhere) this program called Ram Booster which basically dumps stuff from ram freeing it up for whatever you plan on doing with your machine, usually it was a good idea to run it before loading a videogame or app that needs a lot of resources.. it is a very simple program but it is older and I'm wondering if there is anything similar that'll work in Win7?

Windows 7 has a services that predicts and attempts to cache bits of data that you will use, called Superfetch, to enhance performance. What you're doing will possible unload files (or chunks of them, at least) from memory only to have the OS read them from disk back into memory. Know that any excess memory consumed by the Windows 7 will be discarded in a low-memory scenario.

In short there's no point in any third party memory managers, especially not for the purpose of gaming.

Ok, never knew that but it makes sense.. when I had that program many years ago I didn't know that much about computers, I got it from a link off techtv I believe (back when it was still techtv and interesting to watch). It would kind of work in that XP would progressively use more RAM over time and I could free it up with the little app, but I guess I could've just rebooted and gotten the same result.

What about programs that are supposed to clean up your windows system automatically? ie. registry clean/fix, temp files etc.. I'm sure you all know what I mean, Norton used to (probably still does) have one of those suites except Norton would seriously mess with my computers so I never used anything from them. Are those worthless too?

I'm against registry cleaners. They don't do anything for performance, and have a small chance of screwing something up. Ccleaner does registry cleaning, but also gets rid of temp files, and some other minor bloat. You may want to try that, but honestly it doesn't really do much. That's the utility I'd get if I were so inclined.

Yeah I'm always worried about messing up registry when I do stuff like that, I'll just stick to managing autoruns, aside from that I guess when things get too messed a clean install is in order. Maybe I should set up a seperate partition for games so that I don't have to worry about my main OS where I do most of my work, I try to keep it rather clean and regular software doesn't get installed and uninstalled that often anyway.

Thanks.
