Something like Adobe After Effects. Cheap or free?

Can anyone recommend anything like Adobe After Effects that would be cheap or even free?

I have used after effects for years and it is now getting a little expensive as many things. One thing that I found that works for Linux is Gimp with the video plugin that can also downloaded with the gimp package. Gimp is great to photo editing and has a extensive plugin selection.

Adobe Creative Cloud is $240 for one year if you sign up as a student by November 4. The easiest way to qualify as a student if you aren't one already is to sign up for a one or more credit class at a community college. I guess it's not cheap compared to free, but it does include many other Adobe programs. (After writing this, I went to the link above, and there was an ad for the student deal.)

my thoughts on the adobe creative cloud...

pouring money into a subscription service, after the end of that year you own nothing... even worse is subscribing for multiple years. go free alternative or buy a decent software option... or buy aftereffects itself... but renting software is plain nuts.

I personally love AviSynth. Too bad it hasn't been worked on much in years. It's great for the programmer who wants to script video. If you don't program or don't like programming, though, probably best to skip it.
