Just today i bin getting a wiered message in my task bar. Its like a yield sign icon and the error is :

"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file D:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error mat be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."

D: is my secondary hard drive ( IBM 30gig 7200rpm Desktar ). I can go into my D:\ drive but when i open a folder i get a error:

"D:\stuff is not accessible. This request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

Dunno what to do. Thanks for any help. ALso my pc is running on windowsXP Pro, 1.1 T-Bird, 512SDRAM, 1st HD Western Digital 40gig, 2nd IBM Deskstar 30 gig, 330watt Sparkle PSU

i try running Scandisk but it says "Windows was unable to complete the scandisk". I can go to the D: drive but i cant access any folders.

Try and boot from a floppy and then run scandisk.

Do you need whats on there? I am guessing so but if not just reformat the HD. I would do a low level.

Sound to me like your HD is going out.

You should go to ibm site and download software to test the drive. Most companies want you to run software before they give you a RMA.

Well i ran the IBM diagnostics and strange enough nothing is wrong with my hard drive. When i rebooted windowsXP ran scan disk and fixed some errors, i opened My Computer and went into my D:\ drive. Now all my folders are deleted except one folder. I am very pissed that all my data has bin deleted.

Guess i am gonna take out that IBM HD. The HD seems fine but i dont trust it anymore.

Do you have an updated virus scanner? Or was it "repairing" those folders during scandisk. I have seen that kind of problem happen with a virus, but have seen it more from a head crash (usually from someone hitting or accidentally dropping something on the case or the case itself if you move it around). I would do a thorough scandisk in dos from a boot disk if I was you and see if there are any bad sectors/clusters starting.
