I just bought parts for a brand new computer. It's currently a intel d850gb P4 motherboard, 1.4ghz, IBM 7200 RPM desktar 40GB. Everything was working fine for a couple of weeks than I unplugged the ribbon cables from my hard drive in order to get to something on the motherboard but when I plugged the ribbon back in I started getting one of two errors. I either got an error of "boot failure-system halted" or "drive not ready" these messages happen right after the bios, when an OS should begin to load. I thought than maybe I killed the hard drive somehow (is that possible without even removing a single screw?) so I went and bought another IBM 40Gb the exact same hard drive and installed it in my system and everything was going great. Than a couple of days ago I unplugged the new IBM that I had bought and I began having the same problem all over again, the same errors after the bios. I than took both hard drives and stuck them in my brothers computers and they boot just fine. Now I'm questioning whether it's a motherboard problem or something. Please I need help!!!!!!!!!!!

Do the cables work in other machines? Maybe they were damaged from plugging/unplugging. Or try a different cable.

How about something basic: Did you ground yourself before reaching in the box and pulling the cables? Was the machine unplugged at the time? You could have zapped the drive, board or controller if not. But, as others said, try changing the cables first.
