Something is slowing up my computer

Basically, for the last week ive noticed that when im using the desktop (windows XP), and im clicking icons, opening up folders, going into my computer, anything that deals with the desktop or windows structure directly (like control panel, etc) it goes slower then before.

Like theres about a 1 to 2 second lag every so often when i click before anything happens, and i can hear the hdd running as if its loading a huge as@ file or something (like it would sound when u defrag)



I havnt done anything drastic, or installed anything new. My spyware and adware scans came up clean, as did my virus scans.
My RAM (2x1GB) isnt the cause, niether is the CPU, as i get the same SuperPI results running it now as i used to months ago.

So im thinking its either some hidden application running on the desktop (task manager came up negative on that thought) or my hdd might slowly be crapping out (unlikely, as gaming and other things like that still load fine. Its a 160GB Hitachi SATA2).


Also, i dont have any applications running on my desktop, like weather forecasts, searchbars, etc.


Any thoughts?

defrag and scandisk.
Also make sure somethnig isnt using the hdd normally like diskeeper engine or something.

Defragged about 3 days ago............. gonna do a scan disk on tuesday.


How do i check if something is using the hdd?
(like i said, i dont have any 3rd party software that constantly runs, or that is used without me knowing)

System Restore was at 10%, so i took it down to 1% just to see if itd help a little.
Indexing is turned on for the hdd (the indexing service under properties for the C drive)


I tried the app you posted mwmorph but it wouldnt work for Sata (or i didnt know the right controller or whatever)


Is there anyway to go into more depth then the task manager, like a program that will hunt out and report *hidden* programs that might be leeching RAM memory or CPU usage (cause it might be some sort of adware that isnt necessarily adware and wont show up as so)?

i don't think you should put your system restore too low. the reason is windows will start deleting your older backups once it encounters a new one

my exprience is i made some mistake at 7:00 o'clock and when i tried to use system retore. it tells me that it had made a restore point a couple minutes ago.
so leaving it around 5% would be okey for you.

in your case, did you install any new programs before the right click buttom becomes lag? is there any program monitoring your desktop? for example nView desktop manager being enabled, or programs like winrar while you perform right click. those additional bars that you see from right click may swamp over your hard disk for info. hope that'll help

Its not a right click problem, its just a general click problem (ie, left click - opening folders, using the control panel, etc)


And no, no new programs have been installed

I do have nView manager enabled, but its been enabled for the last year and i just started having this problem a week ago.


The only thing i can remember is that when i left last weekend, i used BitLord to download *stuff* (not pron.......sickos ;) ), but like i said, no viruses or adware/spyware has been detected.

I see you're using AVG antivirus. How about try this scan to check the system with something significantly better: http://www.omnicast.net/~tmcfadden/scan.txt

You appear to have Stardock installed, as well as a SiSoft Sandra service and a weird service named Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) ].

You might also want to try the new Windows Defender Beta 2 (Microsoft's successor to Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta), it's right on Microsoft.com. Update, then do a full scan.

Yea, AVG has been good to me in that it was free
Stardock has been on here for a year now (since i built this computer)

I dont know what the Remote Packet Capture Protocol is, dont even know what it might do.



Also, the only last thing i can see is that last weekend (before i noticed this problem) my dad installed a new printer onto the network (his company gave it to him, its a HP fax/cop/scan/color printer station, which can hook directly into a router), and ive been using that as my printer for this computer (over the network, since my computer is upstairs)
Could this maybe be the problem?

Did you try the scanning procedure I linked to? That Remote Packet Capture Protocol thing is installed as a service and you don't know what it is. That oughta make you go :frown: ~ hmmm

I was going to, but i noticed that it stressed i should backup before trying. I have no way of backing up, so i dont want to risk it



What would happen if i assumed the Remote Packet was bad and deleted it?
Full system crash?

For the record, I've never seen anyone run the scan and have their system stop booting as a result. But it's possible, so that disclaimer is so no one can say I didn't warn them. You shouldn't have so much data that you can't back it up, because guess what... drives fail eventually, and your time will come.

Yeah.. I have 2 pcs, and each has a 2nd HDD in it with all my important stuff on it in case i need any of it any time. BTW.. the topic... might be spyware virus etc... Id try and back up everything and give your computer a fresh o/s install.

well i do plan on getting a new hdd, but not for about a month or so.


So until then, i think ill just have to keep my eyes open for ne thing suspicous

I figured out what it was.

Epox provides its own temp monitoring software (USDM Diagnostic software), which installed when i first built it, so at first i didnt suspect it was the culprit (since it had been working fine for almost a year now), but it was the only other software i had that run constantly in the background, so i uninstalled it and voila, everything is fine.

Maybe there was an update i needed..........O well, i dont need to know my temps anymore.
