Something is slowing down my Comp.. but don't know what. need help!!

hello everyone. i recently built a new comp with following stuff

Epox 8KHA+
XP 1600+
Crucial 256mb
100g WD 7200 HDD
Enermax 330w PSU
Toshiba 16x DVD
Plextor/Iomega 12x/10x/32x
AIW Radeon
SB Audigy MP3+
Belkin NIC

problem is... i see that computer lags.. especially when i do some tasks..
i mean.. i know comp should lag a little when with some tasks... but it really lags alot. it even make mp3 to stop at some point.
like when i unzip large files.. or open lots of windows.. can anyone help?
oh also.. my internet download/upload gets real slow too.
but the funny thing is.. it runs fine right after formatting. but using after 3-4 days.. gets slower again.
and rebooting doesn't help much.
what do you guys think the problem is?
 
You didn't mention what operating system you were using? You might have installed some software that is causing this. It might not be a hardware problem, but a software problem.

I would check your FSB and multipler and be sure you are running the procesor at the right speed. WCPUID is good for checking.
I would next verify that your drives are running DMA. Do you have virus software running?
Yes, you should mention an OS. With NT/2000/XP you can view the processes that are running and consuming the CPU cycles. That can be very useful.
 
Make sure in system properties, under the performance tab, that it is not running in Dos Compatibility Mode. This can be caused by not having IDE or Raid controller drivers installed, or some viruses.
 
i am using win 2k. and all the DMAs are checked and for the FSB/Multiplier i think it's correct. (mult, i can't do anythign with it because it's not unlocked. FSB, at 133 before but now 140 to see if that would help any.) i am running Norton Internet Security which as Antivirus 2002 in it. and i looked CPU cycle, when it's unzipping, i see that CPU usage is 100%. Memory didn't change whole lot though.
 
do you have your hard drive partioned?
knock it to 20gb max sizes helps a lot 10,is even better for you normal Startup drive,use others to store stuff🙂
 
i don't have anything unnecessary start-up.. and nothing on the desktop that i do not need. as far as software wise.. i have pretty much same setup i used to use on my older system which included

Celeron 633mhz
Asus P3B-F
256mb Infineon PC133
80g WD 7200 HDD
Asus 40X CD-rom
GF2 MX
Aureal SQ 2500
SMC NIC

which also had Win2K installed.

i still have this system.. and it's much lagless than my XP1600.
but obcourse games run much better on my XP1600. but most of normal activities... seems like my Celeron system is running more smooth than XP 1600+ system.

oh, btw, i had installed Norton Sys Works 2002 last night and optimized my hdd... that seem to help little bit now.. but still some lags.
also i found out when i see the computer lags, my CDRW buffer is 0% - 5% (thanks god to burn-proof 😉 )
 
Possible IRQ /PCI bus conflict. The best way to check is to leave out a card or replace it with another card, and see how it runs for a few days.

Also, moving cards from one slot to another can help.

What are the IRQ assignments?

Check for driver updates.

Run free SisSoft Sandra, make sure your benchmarks are in the right ball park.

I recently built a new system for my son. It was running very slow and I couldn't figure out why. I changed every component in the system and it still ran slow. I finally built him up another system and after he left to go home after the holidays, I went back to the slow system to figure it out. This time I removed the M/B from the case and just left on the video card and the ram and tried botting it . While it was on the table I noticed that the new volcano heatsink that I had installed was shorting out against a wire wound choke. It didn't smoke or refuse to boot, it just ran slow. Maybe you should check for any possible shorts. Take the MB out and lay it on the table and boot it up. Just sharing my "slow" experience, hope it helps!

i don't think that's what causing my comp to lag though.. right now. i kind of think mine is probably just a software issue.
anyway.. Epox owners.. is there any option for that 1/3 divider 1/4 divider on the BIOS? or is it automatic. thanks in advance
