Something is knocking on the side of my house

I'm sitting here watching CNN and suddenly hear something knocking on the side of the house. It's been banging for the past 15 minutes. Pretty loud up here on the 2nd story, but pretty dull downstairs.

I went downstairs and didn't see anyone trying to scale the house. I have no idea what it could be. It's snowing pretty good outside so I don't think anyone would want to climb my house at 2:30am in the freezing cold/snow.

Any thoughts? What should I do? I've got my knife sitting here next to me just in case (has a 6" blade ) and a mouse that won't stop blinking I could throw at whoever comes through the window.

Do you have any trees with branches that could be scraping the side of the house? Branches that might be weighed down with snow, maybe? If not that, then it could be some sort of animal. Last semester, we had a family of 6 squirrels living in a hole in the side of our apartment. We'd hear scratching noises but we couldn't figure out what the noise was. Then we saw some squirrels and did the math.
