Something is FUBAR on my stupid computer *EDIT FIXED*

StageLeft

No Lifer
I must be on the rag. Anyway: Windows XP, 256 megs ram (it's not my computer), slow ass CPU. I'm to the point now where when I click the drop down for a directory listing in any of my problems the wait is like 1-4 minutes PER freaking folder. WTF is with this?

*FIXED* It seems it was a freaking network drives that were mapped to no longer existing servers. They've been down for weeks though and this is new, but I killed them and it seems to be snappy again 😉

Dude..... clean up your HDD and Windows install! Jeez... Well, you did say that it wasn't your computer, didn't you? Well, in that case, Dude..... clean up someone else's HDD and Windows install! Jeez... 😉

A whole bunch of crap I need for work 🙁 But this is a NEW problem. I have 75 megs free now and nothing chewing up CPU cycles. Formatting is not an option.

Check your network drives... sometimes bad connections can cause this problem.

Same thing for CD-ROMs and Floppies.

Rewind in system restore a couple of days, it could be something you've installed recently. My only other guess is spyware or explorer trying to communicate to the internet but blocked via firewall.

I was thinking some kind of network drive mapping problem myself.

I hadn't thought about the CD-ROM of FDD being the culprit. Although you should be able to eliminate this possibility if you don't have a CD or floppy in the drive...

I had this same problem. Everything would slow down to a crawl and my Internet would conk out.

Finally my PC just stopped working. I would get into the windows splash screen and it would lock up. I gave up and decided to do a clean install of Windows but my PC would still lock up even when installing. I could not get the PC to work even after reinstalling. Finally, I must have broken something when I decided to go through each peripheral piece by piece to see what was wrong because something started burning inside the case and my PC shorted. Grrr.. I never found out what the problem was. I'm thinking it was a worm or virus but I'll never know.

Yeah I have a ton of mapped network drives, but I've not added more - you know what - I bet it's because some are not logged on, so I'll check on that.
