What's up geeks? Well i'm having some weird issues with my computer. It seems that my hdd is always running something in the background. I open up my task manager to check what's running in the background but I dont know any difference as usual. My my cpu seems to work a little harder than usual. Sometimes one of the cpu shoots up 20 to 50 percent and that when i'm not doing anything other than browsing the net. Any ideas?

check the processes tab and see what process it is that is using the CPU.

Run a spyware scan.

Use the "processes" tab of task manager and it will show the the percent CPU usage for each process

You can also download FileMon from SysInternals (now a Microsoft owned thing). It will show you exactly what processes are accessing the drive at any moment. It can be overwhelming though, millions of accesses in a short time, since a single action by a program can required dozens of disk accesses.

Do you have the indexing service turned on? Windows might be running that even though you're not idle. Although eventually it should stop having to run all the time and only record changes.

I had similar issue, that i recently solved. What anti-virus system are you using. I had Norton Internet Security running, and when i was gaming i would get random frame lag. It would drop from 70 down to like 15 for about 7 seconds. I uninstalled norton as a test, and installed kaspersky, problem fixed....just an idea.
