Took my laptop (HP probook 6550b) to the airport - few minutes before it went through the security scanner/xray it was working fine, almost fully charged. Few minutes after? Won't turn on without the AC adapter plugged in, battery will not charge. Was not dropped and no one physically touched it but me. Anyone else experience this? I didn't think this was possible. I've found a few other similar reports online, but those reporting the problem aren't generally believed.

As far as troubleshooting, I've tried another AC adapter, same problem. Went ahead and ordered a new battery and will try that (they are cheap, under $20 for this model).

How old is it and how many charging cycles do you think it's had in it's lifetime?

...but that is kind of bizarre.

It's a couple years old. Not sure on charging cycles, but I was still getting a few hours on a charge (this thing usually sits on the coffee table in my living room, and is used casually here and there; only plugged in every week or so when it gets low)

My Dell 6000 laptop ran strong for about 6 years, even after a LOT of abuse... and then one day I plugged it in and got the '4 flashes' ...meaning the battery is toast. Out of the Blue.... but not really unexpected.

New battery and all is well again.
Great! The coincidence of going through TSA check is simply that - a coincidence.

Batteries can go suddenly any time after 2 years.
