Circles aren't the only shape that can be used as manhole covers. There is another class of shapes that have constant diameters, one being the Rouleaux Triangle.
They are superior to circles as manhole covers in that they will not rattle when cars drive over them. Circles are superior in that for a given diameter they have a larger area then the Rouleaux Triangle, which is disadvantageous when an emergency worker must enter wearing an air tank.
