Is there anyway to tell if someone is monitoring your PC? I'm on a network (Win NT) and there are some rumors going around that the IS department can monitor anyones PC at any time. Is this so? Is there any way to defeat or monitor when this is happening?

Look around at the back of your computer. See that cable that looks like an overgrown phone-cord? Pull it out of your system.

Problem solved.

PS - Sorry, I couldn't resist...

Start writing slanderous emails to your boss about how the IS department is slacking off on the job. If they say otherwise, they're watching. :D

Yes - tools like Timbuktoo or Microsoft's SMS Remote Control can be used among many other remote access tools. More likely is that they are watching inbound and outbound emails - especially attachments, and monitoring all Internet activity. A lot of the monitoring is automated through software filters - so they would get flagged by certain words or attachments or Internet sites.

But if given a reason, they can check for everywhere you have been and read through every email on the server, too.

this is possible. If I were to run a business I could install some kind of remote access progy to each computer. Just have these programs running in the background and people would never have a clue. Simple to set up and easy to use. Although I doubt they've done so. That kind of thing is a common rumor

One thing...

The most direct....

Control panel, server. Click users, see if anything is there. Same as in use.

Second.

Command prompt, type netstat. See what connections you have between yours and other computers.

To avoid confusion, stop email, and anything else that would keep a constant connection to the network.

Many bussinesses do run some sort of monitoring software, though it is often just for internet usage. To be safe, dont put anything on your work computer that isint work related or you wouldn't want other people to see

They own the network, you are using it, therefor they own you ;)
They can monitor every single packet that leaves your IP if need be.
Most are not so stringent, unless you give them a reason to be.
ie. pr0n ;)

Wangel... generally not recommended to screw with the company monitoring system. If your efforts are noticed, you will lose your job. Is looking at girly pictures really THAT important?
