Someone verizon wireless tech dude tried to scam me i think

My VX4400 from verizon wireless started restarting itself sometimes and would not send nor receive calls until I pull out the battery and put it back in. I took it to an authorized verizon tech services guy NY Queens Center mall. The guy looked pretty shady and also looked like he was on crack.

The dude looked at it and then after a bit, he leaned over to me he said that he normally could not replace the phone because the plastic piece that covered the face of the lcd had a crack on it. Which has basically nothing to do with the phone capabilities (superficial damage). Then in an even lower voice, he told me he can still fix/replace my phone for 50 bucks though. When i questioned that, then he told me to try bringing it to the store I bought it from to see if there's some kind of store warranty.

Then i took it to the place i bought it who told me that the Queens Center Verizon store is all fvcked up basically and incompetent. Told me to go to Forest Hills Verizon store, which i did, and the guy there took one look at it, and told me there's a known problem with the OS version and he'll have the phone fixed by tomorrow.

So basically i just want to know whether this sheisty tech guy at Queens center was trying to pull a fast one on me on the side or if there really is an official $50 service charge for replacing phones?

my 4400 died one week after my warranty expired and they had a 50 dollar replacement fee for a refurbished model. so now i have a new one after 50 bucks but it still restarts sometimes. this phone is pretty good but when the reception sucks and it's near a big monitor, it goes beserk. even the one with the new OS.

i know verizon's policy is if the phone is lost/damaged/stolen, and you have insurance, you pay $50, and they will replace/take care of your phone.

if you dont have insurance, they charge you full retail price for the phone unless you are eligible for an upgrade (new every 2, that sorta deal). so, if you dont have insurance on the phone and they want $50 to get you a brand new phone, or have it functioning brand new again, it may not be a bad idea to go through with it.

i remember my 4400 used to reboot when near my monitor. so yeah, its more than likely an issue with a lot of those phones. was a good, dependable phone though. im going to miss it.
