I received an official looking e-mail from the "Gmail team" with steps on how to allow my account to be taken over by the requester who happens to have a similar account name to mine!
Just be aware if you receive any messages from the Gmail Team because it could be someone trying to get you to give up your account if it's a more desirable user ID.
Below is a copy of the message I got, I put a Y at the end of the user ID to indicate the false account that was trying to take over mine and I just put all X's for the user ID to represent my actual account ID.
