Someone tried to break into my car

I noticed today that the lock of my passenger door is totally screwed up. Someone clearly tried to jam a screwdriver in there (yes that thing that worked with Toyota Corollas), but didn't manage to break in. Bleh. I'm just pissed because this car is old and it's not even worth fixing anymore, and I hate to have to get this fixed. The passenger door still works but I can't really lock it/unlock it using the keyhole (yay for old cars w/o remotes).

Go do it to someone else's car...and then they'll do it to someone else...and the chain continues until everyone in the world has an equally screwed up lock on their car.

and then a class action lawsuit suing toyota for defective passenger side door locks.

Why don't you just buy new a new door and re-key it? I can't imagine the color would matter that much since it's a 1992 Toyota Previa.

Umm. get it fixed?

Buy a repair manual, buy a lock. Maybe 20 or 30 bucks. Take your time and have a sense of pride when youre done.

dont those $99 car alarms come with a remote control lock/unlock/alarm thing with them? i always assumed they did for some reason but i might be wrong. maybe its cheaper to go that route and just leave the keyhole broken.

can't you just lock/unlock it from inside?

Someone did this to my 96 Impala SS. I was furious! Not only did they screw up the lock, they bent up the sheet metal of the door. I haven't fixed it yet cause it's gonna cost me at least $1000 :(
I wish they had just broken my window and set off my alarm, and I would have been out there to give them the beat down!
Since then, I've added a proximity sensor... so if you even stand next to my door my car will beep at you, and my keychain fob beeps at me.
If I catch someone messing with my car when I'm at home, near a gun, they will be eternally pwned. And I'll probably end up pwned too, but I don't care. You don't fsck with a guy's car!

I have a car alarm. My car was recent enough to have that option.

As for leaving the keyhole broken, sure... I don't mind. It still unlocks and locks from inside. It opens flawlessly, and I use the driver-side 99% of the time anyways to unlock. It's just that with a messed up keyhole and the door handle slightly pulled out, it might encourage other idiots to try to break into my door.

The only thing slightly valuable is my bowling ball and that's because I go bowling about once a week. Other than that, I keep nothing in my car. And even the ball is stored in my trunk and I have a good tint on my windows. You would have to look pretty hard to find my ball and shoes.

oh and i'd check ebay motors for spare parts if you do end up fixing it. i've had good luck finding parts on the cheap on there... usually from totaled cars or something similar. also look into finding out which other toyota cars that year used the same lock type, so you can find parts for that car and use them in yours.

The only person that would break into your car or try to steal it is a crackhead trying to get $20 for it. Luckily for you, the crackhead didn't succeed the first time.

I think your ball is safe for now. ;)

Yeah I guess. I'm usually not too scared for my car getting broken into because it's not exactly hte best car in the world to begin with. If this were back in my affluent hometown, I would leave it. However, living in ghetto-ville Oakland, my only worry is that my door now has a sign "Hey look, some idiot tried to break in and could only get 50% of the way there. How about someone finish the job off?"

ahh i see.. so an aftermarket remote unlocker wouldn't help anyway if the problem is that it is prone to being broken into again. the last thing some guy wants to steal from your car is your bowling ball and shoes :p bowling ball he will have to lug back to whereever he is going and the shoes probably wont fit him. hes probably looking for cash, electronics, etc. smal & valuable items. but ya, like i said definately check out ebay for parts. i doubt it will be too hard to fix. might take a few hours, but it'll cost you a lot in labor if you take it somewhere.

Maybe the tint is what makes them think something good is in there.

Most that has ever happened to me is that someone took my loose change and left me a sticker, but my car is older and I don't lock it anyway, heh.
