Dammit! I had an envelope with a check to the student loan company in the mailbox this morning. I came home and found the envelope on the ground. It was opened and the contents inside were gone. The envelope had my student loan information, the check with my bank account number, routing number, and signature.

I already called the student loan company to note the account and make my payment over the phone. I called the bank to ask for some advice. They told me that I should open a new account, so I'm going to do that tomorrow. I also place a 90 day fraud alert on Equifax just in case.

I'm thinking of calling the police just to file a report.... and if the postal service had a number to report mail tampering, then I would call them, too.

Any other tips?

1. drop all mail into a blue box
2. use online bill pay for everything

3. That's a federal offense. Report it to the Postal Inspector.

Yeah, I've migrated most of my bills online. But some of my bills don't have the online option. I guess I'll look into the bill pay feature.

Other than Netflix returns, that's the only thing I leave in the mailbox nowadays. Too many punks in my neighborhood, especially when my house is right at the school bus-stop.

I used to use online billpay through my bank, but I canceled the service once I paid off most of my bills. If I use the service at least once a month, it's free. Otherwise, the bank bills me $5.95 just because I'm signed up. Also, what I didn't know, if the bill you're trying to pay isn't on the list for the bank, and you manually enter that information, the bank just mails them a check anywayz. Found that out when one of my payments didn't make it. That was a big headache to fix. Now, for phone, credit cards and other misc stuff, most places have sites online that let you make payments.
