Someone talk me out of this... "secondary" laptop

Maybe it's because I have the itch to buy something again. Maybe it's the fact that my tax return just came in. Maybe it's the recent Anandtech review...

I'm very happy with my UL30A-A2. My only complaint is that I can no longer game on the go. Since I'm home most of the time now (work from home) it hasn't been much of an issue, but I do travel from time to time and once in a while I find myself longing to play a quick CS: S match or fire up Titan Quest. Try those on a 4500MHD - not a fun experience.

I read the Anandtech Alienware M11x review, and started to get that itch again. You know the one - when a new line of graphics cards is released, even though you just bought one six months ago, or when a new shiny case is released, even though you have three out in the garage already. It looks like a perfect solution for me - it's decently small and portable, it has decent battery life, and yet it still packs a punch. It should be plenty to play pretty much whatever I throw at it, since my desktop will still be my primary gaming rig. It would also allow me to dedicate my UL30A to work, and keep the M11x for personal use and play.

My main concerns are, of course, that it's a waste of money (just to play games with), the fact that having two separate laptops is way over the top and geekish, and the lack of Nvidia Optimus (driver support). If there was a similarly-spec'd laptop, perhaps larger and with worse battery life for a bit cheaper, I'd grab that instead.

What do you guys think? Waste of money, or go ahead and indulge? :p

Last month I was in the same shoe of getting a 13" toy.
My choices of brushed ALUMIUM laptops were, again, just want something less "plastic"......

Dell Vostro V13
Asus UL30a
Acer AS1380T
HP DM3-1040US

At the end, I got a more "metal" HP and most importantly it only cost me $499.99 shipped.

Just to confuse you little more...here is something you can read...

It absolutely is. This is a 13" notebook (don't let the screen size fool you), you are getting less for more. If you wanted real gaming power, you can find 15.4" notebooks that can be twice or thrice as powerful. The screen is too small to play games on comfortably.

It makes it truly a pointless laptop, because if you use it as a regular portable, then you simply have something bigger and heavier than it needs to be for the screen size.

Any suggestions for $800 or so?

I still prefer something smaller. 14" or less would be ideal, though I'd consider 15.4". Absolutely no 16-17" monsters.

$800 for a gaming laptop? The best you can do is something like an Asus G51 type laptop, which would have a GTX 260M and a Core 2 Duo of some type.

But what you should do is just wait for the the 5870 or next generation Nvidia card to appear in a 15.4" notebook, which is inevitable. They probably won't cost $800 though.

Yeah, unfortunately I'm budget-limited on the idea. It would only be something to entertainment when I'm away from the desktop for a day or two, so I really don't want to throw a ton of cash into it.

That's why the M11x seemed to fit the bill perfectly - it's capable enough of playing almost all modern games, but it doesn't break the bank.

If you're comfortable with the drawbacks (large case, small screen), then the M11x will probably not disappoint you.

I would be alot more comfortable with the M11x if it actually had the chassis of an 11.6" instead of that of an 13". Or perhaps a lot more power for it's size (GTX 260M power).

I am sure you can put your money to more important things, but new insurance, buy stocks or something that soon become your asset.

If the money is burning a hole in your pocket, go buy something else you will enjoy. Something like a new surround sound receiver, or a new radio setup for your car, etc. Or hell, go buy a really nice monitor. Dont waste it, you will kick yourself later...

Better yet, sock it away. You may need it to by health insurance down the road.

Sorry - I thought OP was asking to be talked out of buying a secondary laptop. :)

Yep - and you guys succeeded, at least for now. ;)

Not that I like to get into personal stuff on the forums, but I'm 24 and have been generally good about saving money over the years. Sometimes it's just nice to treat yourself.

I've decided to start a business, and will be buying myself a new toy depending on how well that turns out instead. So, I'll give it a few months, and then we'll see. :)

Thanks all.
