I remember they determined who the president was on the same day. When do they usually get the result?

They've actually had them since September. The last couple months have just been a sham to get some more advertising revenue for the major networks.

If NH, OH, PA and VA all go Obama we will know by 9:00pm.

If Romney picks up VA, we won't know until 10:00pm when they call Iowa and Wisconsin.

If Romney some how picks up Wisconsin, we won't know until CO/NV. If it gets this far, Obama needs either or Romney needs both. That could/should be known by 11pm.

I just don't think Romney is going to win all five of FL, VA, WI, CO, and NV. If he doesn't win Ohio, he has to sweep all 5.

I think it will take overnight. Many of those battleground states will be very close.

"In the last two days, six new polls of Ohio voters have been released, five of which favor President Barack Obama, by leads of 6 points, 4 points, 4 points, 3 points and 2 points. The last reports a tie, from right-leaning Rasmussen, which gave former Gov. Mitt Romney a 2-point advantage last week. Obama now has a 3.1 percentage point lead in Pollster's average for Ohio and a 2.9 percentage point lead in the RealClearPolitics average for Ohio. A 3 percentage point lead is hardly an insurmountable margin for Obama. But it has been so consistent over the past several weeks that Romney ought to be hoping that the polls favor Obama on a systematic basis by overestimating the turnout of respondents with demographics that favor him. This is certainly possible, but it would mean that many different polling institutions are making similar mistakes. The outcome of Ohio, then, will be as much a referendum on the art of polling as it will be on the art of the presidency."

By state; when the polls close across the state and then a couple of hours unless it is close.

Now the media can make projections well before the official results.
They can show percentages that show trends.

Conceivably, Alaska and Hawaii can still be polling, but the overall CONUS totals have enough information to project the national winner.

Those two states pretty much cancel each other out in terms of the EC counts.

I think it will take overnight. Many of those battleground states will be very close.

The key battleground states that close at 7 or 8 eastern should be 99% reporting before midnight. But even if not they can call a state before then with statistical analysis of what polling places have reported.

Only recounts would keep the result from being decided on election night. I don't think any state is going to have results that trigger a recount.

It could come late if it comes down to CO/NV. If it comes down to them, they still should be 99% reporting by 2am.

I am in no way into politics.
I usually vote, but not this time.
That said, I predict that by 8:00 PM EST, Obama's landslide victory will be obvious.

Think it'll be a landslide? There's never been a doubt in my mind he'd win, but I started getting unsure of a landslide after the last month or so.

If Obama wins VA, he'll win the election. So best case we know by shortly after 7pm EST (unlikely they'll be able to call VA very quickly though as it is close).

More likely is that an hour or two after 7:30pm EST, numbers will start to pour in from Ohio precincts that indicate polling data has or has not been accurate. If it has been accurate, we can assume that Obama is going to win because according to the polls he is a lock.

The only doubt as to an Obama victory would come sometime after 7:30pm EST when unexpectedly strong numbers start coming in for Romney in various OH districts. If this doesn't happen, it's likely a winner (Obama) will be known before polls close in the West.

They won't call it for a while but basically if the results aren't surprising anyone, Obama has won.

Honestly I don't care anymore but I will watch a bit of fox news in case they don't win and watch as they cry. :p

It will be the best entertainment if it happens.

Only way Obama loses is if he takes a shit on a bald eagle and wipes his ass with an American flag.

They already know the result... they just let you know at the time of their choosing.

PS Electoral College is retarded. It's like they are playing this

And how is a federal election dictated by state laws on eligibility and voting methods?????

There is no way the networks will call it before the polls close in California.
That's their official policy, not calling a state until the polls close.

Unless its a blowout California's 55 electoral votes will be needed by either candidate to get over the top.

However, if before 11pm EST Obama gets to 203 electoral votes he wins because he is a for sure lock in California and Washington which have 67 votes between them.

If Obama keeps Pennsylvania and takes Ohio, nh, and Virginia, the networks will start saying that it looks like Obama is getting reelected.
