im in the same boat as you. Had 2 AC's go out on me in the last week. One, the fan died (but I can hear the compressor/whatever) and the other one has started to develop this nasty grinding noise after being on for random periods of time. :( Gotta get a couple new ones, the one remaining 5K BTU doesnt cut it for a 1500 sq. ft apt.

OK - I'll recommend the model I bought last year:

The Kenmore 72055

While this is not nearly the cheapest ($219.99 for a 5600 BTU window air conditioner - currently on sale for $199!) It is one of the best. It is was rated #2 by Consumer Reports, has an EER efficiency rating of 11.0, and is programmable and has a REMOTE! too cool (pun intended ;) )

I love being able to roll over in the middle of the night and turn it on/off or adjust the temp!

Big thumbs up from the Scoobmaster - glad I bought one!!!!!!!

AC with remotes are cool. Virtually all the AC i came across in thailand where remoted controlled, and meant for one room. Hell they evebn had a remote controlled fan

im thinking about getting one of these for my room so i dont have to turn on the central AC. they had a bigger one at walmart for ~$200 . going to try and look around for a smaller one locally like at lowes or home depot. used to have one when i was a kid and it cooled pretty well.. and you dont have to stick it in the window.
