I'd review the carrier's size and weight restrictions for what you want (carryon\checked) and maybe figure out what plane you are flying on. And then read the reviews on whatever bag you are looking at. Stated dimensions are (sadly) not the same as actual dimensions.

you have money? Tumi
you no have money? Samsonite

I've had good luck with TravelPro as well. I'd like an expensive bag but then I'd probably care more about scratches or getting it lost or stolen. The $90-150 range seems to last quite a few years

pend where you are planning to travel

Going to the first world any rolling suitcase will do

Going to third world I would look at a travel back pack

i've had good luck with my samsonite spinner that i got like 6 years ago. i'm sure there is better quality out there but it has been good for me.

definitely go with spinner wheels though, so much better.

Although most of our luggage is 4 wheel spinners I would say that what is better depends on preferences.
Spinner Cons:
-You lose storage space with 4 wheels
-They move around on their own easier which can be a PITA on public transportation
-They don't do as well on rough or uneven surfaces. Yes you can roll most of them on 2 wheels but the wheels tend to be smaller and have more range of motion so they will be less stable\easy to roll
-Wheels are more exposed and, therefore, more vulnerable. Plus there are 4 chances for a wheel to break instead of 2

Steamer trunk.

Sure it'll be heavy, inconvenient, bulky, and probably more expensive...

but just think of all the hipster chicks you'll be able to impress.

That's great if you're traveling by ocean liner or perhaps by rail but no airline would accept a steamer trunk as checked luggage. You'd have to ship your luggage to your destination via air freight. :p

I don't understand LV luggage for non-private travel - but it is sexy as fuck.

And expensive as fuck. I wonder how well it holds up.

Can you imagine checking a bag that cost you almost $4,000? Um, don't lose that mkay?

that's what I'm saying - and then it just falls into the luggage conveyor afterwards and you're praying nobody gets to it before you do.

"Whatever looks best at the thrift store" is how I've always selected luggage.

 I'd be more worried about the luggage itself than what is inside the bag.

My most expensive pair of shoes cost around $150 and that is probably the most expensive piece of clothing I would wear regularly. I don't own anything expensive enough that I could pack to even approach the cost of that bag.

People with luggage like that probably fly private jets anyway.

I've gone into places that sell stuff like this. They can be pretty snooty.

I just glanced at the dimensions but wouldn't they qualify as international carry ons? After all the point is to actually be seen with them...

I thought packed suitcases were included in the ticket?

They have those take a bag things when you get off the plane... like the mint bowl when you're leaving a restaurant.

I travel a ton for work and leisure so luggage is kind of a big deal for me. For full-size pieces, Rimowa if you can afford it. Samsonite's quality has gone down considerably in the last 5-10 years but their high-end stuff is still well thought out and has a great warranty. TravelPro and Victorinox also make great stuff. I actually have a mid-size piece from Muji that I really like and got for a low price (clearance).

I picked up a Delsey 29" Aero Helium full size a few weeks ago because eBags.com had it on sale and couldn't pass it up. Can't comment on it yet as it's only seen one trip.

If you have access to a local CostCo or CostCo.com, check them out.

I'm very happy with my Kirkland carry on I purchased a few years ago, only complaint is I'd prefer 4 wheels instead of 2. The quality of the fabric, the replaceable wheels and substantial zippers is pretty fantastic.

Same here, I actually went a bit further and added "different" to the criteria, because I want to be sure it's mine even peripherally. I beat the crap out of my suitcases/luggages, no need to spend good money on them.
