Bah! Bottom fishing again!

Nothing personal, but...

If it doesn't have an Intel Penryn processor and Blu-ray, start looking elsewhere... 🙂

Best Buy is soooo yesteryear!

1st..... Penryn isn't in anything other than engineering samples of vendor product.

2nd.... Intel just announced a delay on the Penryn processors due to a design issue. It won't affect all Penryn's, but availability will be impacted across every vendor.

I've had this sitting in my shopping cart all weekend and haven't quite pressed the checkout button yet 🙂

the cpu is certainly subpar, but it'll be upgradable to a penryn if they ever hit retail.

someone had a pretty decent idea of getting the cheapest dell available with the fastest penryn proc with a $300 off coupon and then swapping the cpu's. hah.

Take a look at this HDX build if you want. http://www.shopping.hp.com/web...id=in_r329_emailconfig Now that's with the 4 year warranty and accidental repair, which i love, but to you may not be worth 430$. It's up to you. If you want subtract that and go to the X7900 Core 2 and 2x250GB HD's instead of the 2x160GB. I you can go 4G, you can get every single feature. http://www.shopping.hp.com/web...id=in_r329_emailconfig

Have fun 😀.

Oh and future reference, if you get an HDX, take pictures!! 🙂

my only gripe with it is that the 17" screen comes in 1280x800, which is low for a 17" laptop. if that is fine with loki8481, then perfect. otherwise, see what comes up at the end of the month...

Um...

It's a typo on BB's behalf, it's really 1440x900. For anyone else interested there's a thread of this product in Notebooks: See Here

REAL LINKAGE

The most interesting model in the series is Gateway's entry-level notebook, the Gateway P-6831FX. It is priced at $1350 and comes with a 17-inch LCD display to support 1440x900 WXGA+ resolution, an Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 (1.66GHz, 2MB shared L2 cache), 3GB of RAM, a 250GB 5,400 RPM hard drive and a multi-format dual-layer DVD-R/RW/DVD-RAM drive.

Although its technical specifications are not that impressive, the $1350 price tag qualifies it as "best buy", given the fact that it is a 3 GB, 17-inched notebook, still. It is true that the notebook prices are continually dropping as the technology is becoming mainstream, but the Gateway price policy seems to be backed up by {COUGH} mother-company Acer to protect its North American market {/COUGH}.

Bottom fishing at it's best?!?!?!? You be the judge... 😀

Acer's build quality has gotten substantially better; many people on these forums will back me up on that through their purchases.

OP: I see no problem with the CPU. Unless your playing games at less than the laptop's native resolution (and with a GPU like that I doubt it), then there's no serious bottleneck.

But going back to my original post, if you have the money to spend on a decent laptop, then I wouldn't bother with a pre-configured Gateway and such. However if your not willing to splurge money and want the best gaming PC for your dollar, then it's by far the best choice I've seen.

On the subject of "people on these forums"...

When I was shopping for my current lappy, I talked to a Service Tech at PC Club, and he claimed Acers were no better and no worse than anything else.

He said they repair HPs more than anything, and suggested staying away from them!

LoL!

MANY ppl on these forums *think* HP lappys are invincible, so caveat emptor when listening to them! 😀

the bill for the furniture that I bought before christmas arrived today, so I decided to take that as a sign to hold off on buying a laptop for a paycheck or two. haha.

if the HP HDX's w/ 8800's are released by then, that's probably what I'll go with; if not, I'll probably go with the 8800 gateway.

I know laptops =! servers, but I've worked with HP/compaq servers every day for the past 5 years and have always thought the build quality was pretty high.
