Someone recommend a free software firewall.

Are you looking for a Firewall to run on client PC's or a firewall to run on the network level to protect the whole network?

Really the best firewall, is a Router vs. software on a computer. If this computer is being used on hotspots, the Firewall that comes with Windows 7 & 8.x will do a better job then those mentioned.

No, a firewall is the best firewall. A router is not a firewall, although some bundle a poor excuse for a firewall in.

If you're looking for something simple to configure the built-in Windows Filtering Platform I've seen Simplewall[1] come up. It only has application granularity but it's good for blocking outgoing connections.

If you don't really care about the extra complexity of blocking outgoing connections then just use the default Windows Firewall in "Public" computer mode (in fact you should always be using public computer mode even on your own private network).

This.

Routers should not be used as your only line of defense.
Software firewalls are good to let you know what outbound traffic is going on, which is more important that inbound IMO.

huh! not much help so far.
Dont only use the windows one. Never!
use Zone alarm free or comodo free.
I have use'd Zone alarm for over 20 years.

antivirus!
AVG free or comodo again.
ues'd AVG over 20 years.

The layering concept of security certainly applies. There is no one perfect solution as it depends on your needs. Really any free solution would be fine. They all are essentially the same at that level with only interface differences. That is the windows firewall is still considered. Network level solution exist more than just NAT but NAT still has it's place. I personally use untangle NG at home. For $50 per year, I can do a heck of a lot of protection for my network. I have 4 kids which says it all right there, but I know that solution isn't for everyone. Consider just trying the various programs and choose the one you like.
