Someone really needs to tell the local cops about snopes

The head of security at work sent round a circular e-mail, which he had received from his contact at the local police, and which he had been asked to forward.

The e-mail is a verbatim copy of the one here save that it only covered points 1 to 4.

Numbers 2 and 3 are such obvious hoaxes that it's difficult really to understand how someone in a position to be aware of these things can get suckered in.

Sheesh.

I have co-workers that get urban legend e-mails, then print them out and hang them up at work. I got tired of it and started printing out the Snopes pages relating to them and hanging them up next to their print-outs.

My favorite one was when my coworker forwarded an email to everyone that said something like "Make sure to look up in the night sky on Date/Time, because the moon will be closer to Earth than it ever will be in the next 100,000 years!" There was even a photoshopped picture, and it showed the moon taking up half of the freakin sky. She looked astonished when I explained it to her.

The sad part is: The moon IS receding from earth (a few inches a year if I remember correctly), the email isn't completely wrong.

I like when the local news has a story about "Be on the lookout for an email asking for your banking information!"

Welcome to 3 years ago. You can tell when one of the anchors got an email like this, then their little brain lights up with "THIS WOULD BE THE BEST BREAKTHROUGH STORY OF MY CAREER!!!!"
