I just built a new CPU, but I am still sort of a noob. My PC is up and running but just found out about chipsets fan. Noone on other forums have been answering my questions, but I eventually found out through googling, that the fan is used to cool the mobo's chipset much like a CPU cooler is used to cool the processor.

My main question now is, am I required to and should I use one? and if so where to get one and what kind. My PC specs are below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Case: K8N Neo Platinum Socket 754
Chipset: nVidia nForce3 250Gb
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (NorthBridge)
1GB of PC3200 memory
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
200GB Maxtor HD
DVD+-RW
CD-RW

If your system is stable, you won't need one. I disconnected the chipset fan on my msi board, and it works fine without it. It ran at almost 6k rpm, which is too noisy for me.

Welcome to forums !

U allready have Chipset Cooler on that mobo. Its just passive - no fan, just heat sink.
The chipset is the big yellow square on the right side of the AGP slot with "MSI" in the middle.

Picture Of that Mobo

That is known problem of this chipset runing hot but that dosn't mean u will run into problems. And u might buy different Chipset Cooler that comes with Fan if u like, just check the store close to you or online.

And its always good to search forums before u post ! :)

Thanks so much!!!

I haven't had any stability problems since the build. My system temp idles between 28 - 31 during load it goes up to around 35 - 40 C.

For some reason while I'm in the BIOS my system reports higher temps (mid 40's), when i get to windows it goes down.

As soon as I posted this message I read on another website that the chipset already has a mini heat sink attached to it, and I see exactly what it is talking about. :)
It also recommended getting a fan assisted heatsink if there are plans to overclock.

if I don't really need one, then i won't worry about it since I haven't been having any overheating issues so far. I just was VERY curious about if it was actually required like the CPU cooler. Thanks for both of your help. Yall are the FIRST to reply to my question since yesterday and I posted on 5 boards and I was starting to go crazy trying to get an answer.

I really appreciate it!:D

No problem mate !

And if ur windows and bios temps different ,so the progie u use in windows might tell it not accurate.
Try different progies to Monitor ur Mobo temps ,see if it gets better.
Peace.
