Okay, this problem is about 2 months running now. I thought I had it all figured out, then I went to apply my fix, it wasn't fixed.
Here's the issue. I moved back into my dad's house which we wired for ethernet a couple years back when RoadRunner came into the area. We were happily sharing the connection back then (even a dialup connection at one point in time). Then I moved out, and we hooked his cable modem up directly.
Like I said, I since moved back in (begrudgingly), and figured that it would be easier and cheaper for me to have RoadRunner provide me with a second IP address. So I ordered one up, took my D-Link DSS-5+ switch down to the basement, hooked everything up, and... sigh, my machine continually produces a 169.254.x.x IP address. My dad's doesn't.
After spending hours on the phone with RoadRunner, we determined that everything on their end was setup and working correctly. So, I went to hunt down all of the possible problems on my end.
First was the NIC in my machine. Well, I bought a new one, put it in, and I was still getting the 169.254 addy. So I put the old NIC back in.
Next was the Switch. I didn't think it was the switch as it worked fine for me in the past. Today I set up our brand new Linksys Wireless AP + Router, and plugged in the cable to it. Again, my computer got 169.254.x.x. Grr.
Last but not least, I actually had run a brand new length of cable, crimped on brand new ends, and once again plugged into the router. 169.254.x.x. :|
So that has now taken every variable out of the equasion and I'm clueless.
To make matters worse (or more confusing), I bring the router upstairs next to my computer. I use a short cable, plug in directly to that, and now my machine is talking to the router happily.
So the router, NIC, my machine, etc., work fine. I'm assuming the cable works fine too, because it's a brand new length of cable. But I can't get an IP across it.
Anyway, the cable isn't more than 50 feet in length, or at least not much more. My NIC is a Linksys LNE100TX, but I also tried a D-Link DFE-530. You already know that I'm using (or want to use) a Linksys Wireless AP + 4-Port Router/Switch. Cables are hand made, solid-core CAT5 with crimp on ends. I know I did everything right on the cables.
Anybody have any ideas?
