Please tell me what to do in the following situations. I have little experience in dealing with trolls/CSR.

1. I bought a 56k (hardware) modem on eGay for 20.50 after shipping. Part of his description was "...The modem is working, but is being sold "as is"..." When I received it, and installed it, the system WON'T EVEN BOOT! I can't even get into the BIOS setup. When I remove the modem, everything is fine. I tried to contact him with e-mail, but he won't even respond. I paid with PayPal with a credit card though, so can I dispute the charge with my credit card company if the eGay troll won't refund my money?

2. I bought a 13.99 item on x10.com with a 15 off voucher. However, I was suprised to find that my credit card has been charged after all. Is there anything I can do?

Thanks

P.S. How come the proper name of "eGay" is a forbidden word?

<< The modem is working, but is being sold "as is" >>

You are sh|t out of luck here :(

2) Have you talked to X10's customer service to see what they say? Might want to start there and find out if they can help out.

Most credit card companies allow you to file a dispute against any charge. The sooner you contact the card company, the better. That would probably be your best bet to not have to pay.

Thats very true, but he bought it "as is". He basically screwed the pooch on that one, especially since the guy has proof. I never buy anything as is, unless I am willing to take the risk. 99% of the time, as is means it is FUBAR. :D

Oh yeah, here is what I would do Wedesdo...

Go to the local store, and see if you can find the same modem you have already. Buy it, bring it back, and swap it out. Take the old one back, and get your money back. Only do this as a last resort, after you try getting it RMA'ed. Its kinda in your hands, so try the RMA thing and bite any charges that you incur, and see if the other guy will help out.

The swap thing is wrong. Flat out. If you want to do it is your decision obiviously, and you have to take the consequences. Your best bet is just to bite the bullet, and take this as a lesson learned. Its a cruel reality, but you are kinda between a rock and a hard place.

Thanks for all your help so far. If any one has any more suggestions, feel free to reply.

I guess $20 isn't that much to lose, since I just made $180 on the casino deal...

Wedesdo--yeah, for $20, not worth much hassle. Since he hasn't responded to emails, I'd send him one more. In it I'd put:
1. How many email attempts I'd made.
2. Tell him "The modem is working, but is being sold "as is" DOES NOT mean NOT WORKING.
3. Include a brief feedback example and tell him that you will place this in feedback comments if you do not receive a responsive email from him by 7/7/00.
4. Feedback example (Negative): Numerous attempts to contact seller. I apprised him of this feedback in advance. No replies. He apparently thinks "is working, as is" means NOT WORKING. Be wary!!!
5. That's probably all it's worth doing. If he's legit, he'd at least be willing to email ya. I'm guessing he doens't do much biz on The Bay.

Oh, the words have been banned for a long time. I imagine it's because any auction link for The Bay has the word in it. This prevents people from spamming with auction links, unlike the link in my sig that I do for a buddy because it's for the good of anandtechkind.
