I'm going to setup a Winxp image on a Win2k RIS server, are there any problems I could encounter?

There have no Winxp images been put on that RIS server, only win2k images.
I have never come close to that network so its a first time for me to use RIS there, actually first time ever for me;)

What I know so far is prep the computer, copy the user I'm using to the default user profile directory and then run riprep.exe to create an image.

RIS is used to push down an OS unattend install not an image. The BEST way to push an image through RIS is to use RIS and integrate it with Ghost 7.0/7.5. If you'd like, I have a full write up on installing RIS, and the integration of Ghost is pretty easy (I also have an write up of that too). If you need the documentation just let me know (PM me). I've used RIS/Ghost to push out 10 images at a time (you can do more though) and it works great. Just make sure you have a PXE compliant NIC (on the client's machine) and you should be good to go. ;)

I tried it yesterday and something weird happened

I pressed f12 to get into the network install thang and tried to install the win2k basic image that was there, and the windows setup started complaining that the nic was not supported or something, how can I get past that?

Did the RIS menu come up when you booted off the NIC on the client's machine? You also have to make sure you have a PXE compliant NIC on the client's machine.

Ok, for everyone requesting the docs on the RIS/Ghost integration, I'll have it to you by the weekend. Symantec has instructions on its site, but it's all jacked up. If you do it the way they tell you, it won't work. I also will document a common problem (Ghost bug) that comes up quite often and can be VERY frustrating. The docs will also include common switches to let you push and pull images to the server.

I'm pretty busy this week but I'll get the docs sent out as soon as I can. Maybe I should create a web page for it. Hmmm...

Anyway, Czar, get back with me because I gave you the link to Symantec for the Ghost integration and it is wrong. You have to at least be able to make that unattend install work through RIS though. If you can't get that to work, pushing an image out through Ghost (with RIS) won't work either.

the RIS menu came up, and allowed me to login to see all awailable images, when I selected the blank win2k image the setup started. Then right in the beining of the setup it stopped and gave me an error message that the nic was not recocnized.

Ok, do you have Ghost integrated with RIS yet? Or this this just RIS. If it is just RIS then you need a PXE compliant NIC. It really isn't expensive. If you don't want to foot the bill for extra NICs, just use Ghost 7.0/7.5 and a network boot diskette. It will do the same as RIS/Ghost will do but you'll need a diskette to hit the Ghost server.

no ghost, just pure ris I think

the nick is pxe compliant, at least it boots up on it and it has the 32 character code and it connects to the ris server at boot up, just the win2k install cant find the nic so it cancels

Jack, I will like to have, if possible those docs about RIS/Imaging from a server, I like to understand all possible scenarios when imaging.
You can email or send me a PM telling me how yu wants to do that.

Thanks in advance and best regards
