What is the difference here? I noticed that the 6600 GT, 6800, 6800 GT, and 6800 Ultra are NV40, but then I saw that the 6600's, the 6800LE and another 6800 was NV41. What is the difference?

The 6600GT is NV43, not NV40.

6800nu/GT/Ultra/UltraExtreme = NV40

6600 vanilla = NV43

6600GT = NV43

Not really sure what NV41 is going to be but "rumors" say it is a 256 bit mem bus using GDDR. And is intended to replace the vanilla 6800 (sixty eight hundred).

So essentially, the different cores just have different names, depending on the memory bus, memory type, and pipelines?

Well, the maximum number of pipelines in an NV40 are 16 whether they are disabled or not.
The maximum number of pipelines in the NV43 are 8. There are no disabled quads to "awaken".

Sort of like what ATI did with the R300 when they made the 9600. Halved everything. Pipes, mem bus.
Not softmoddable to 8 pipes because they just arent there.

The NV43 is also a LOT cheaper for NV and OEM's to manufacture because there are significantly less transistors than NV40, smaller manufacturing process (more cores per wafer), and less layers on the PCB due to a 128 bit memory interface. Less traces = less cost.

NV41 will be 12 pipeline part with 256 mem bus. The problem now is that NV has to sell NV40 222million trans part with 8 pipes disabled as 6800le and 4pipes disabled as 6800. Having another gpu with fewer pipes to begin with means less trans and more gpus per wafer which means more profit per chip.

Is there any more official word on the release of the NV41 core? Official word on whether it'd be AGP or PCI-e?

I'm not sure whether to trust that article from The Inquirer or not and get my hopes up and wait for the NV41 6800NU's.

I thought they made it clear the NV41 is a 12 pipe mobile part in Anands article?
