It depends what OS you are running as well as what kinds of applications you frequently use. Windows 98/ME manage memory poorly, but use very little. Windows NT/2K/XP manage memory well, but use a little more (This can be reduced significantly through tweaking). Linux is pretty good to memory, but a lot has to do with the way you set it up. Everyday applications like those from MS Office, Internet Explorer, Chat programs, etc. are not memory hogs. There is a pretty significant impact in certain games, for example MOHAA. Video editing and 3D animation are also uses in which the extra memory will help.
