that the sun is no longer burning. That it died out. I know it takes awhile for the light from the sun to reach us. But how long?

The earth itself may not even be here; at least not as we know it. Don't dying stars expand quite a bit before finally colapsing and going out?

92,955,820.5 miles (Astronimical Unit) / 670,616,629 mph (Speed of Light) * 60 min = 8.31674 minutes

If I remember from astronomy class way back when, isn't the sun going to encompass (and destroy) the entire solar system long before burning out?

About 8 mins if it just poofed out of existence. But realistically speaking, the earth will probably be pretty much destroyed once the sun becomes a red giant.
