It was in a pile of mail that we were opening, and we accidentally opened it and read the contents before realizing it was addressed to someone else.
If I were you I would run and go hide under your matress. A federal statute known as 18 USC Section 1702 makes it illegal to open correspondence addressed to someone else.
Fixed it for him.

It does sound kinda fishy, if they're going to use the account for fraudulent purposes you'll be the one on the hook for it because it's your address. I would contact them just to play it safe.

Though it could also be the previous owner or something like that. The previous owner of my house past away and I still get Christmas cards for her. I don't know what's more sad, the fact that they're not aware of her passing and still sending her cards, or the fact that she gets more cards than I do. o_O

lol, and how exactly do you propose that would work?

If they do anything illegal, the company (in which the police will demand info) will have your address on file, instead of their address. Though, with something like an ISP I guess it's kinda hard to fake an address given a tech has to actually go install the service, but I'm sure con artists who know what they're doing can figure some weird way to manipulate that. Can't think off the top of my head how it would be done though. And even if it's wrong on file it could still eventually be traced through the wiring.

Chances are OP's case is some weird mistake on AT&T's part, but just saying, it's worth reporting just to be safe. There's some really weird and convoluted scams out there.
