This is interesting. I went to craigslist to try and find an apartment in a local area (New Haven, CT). I emailed the poster asking about details and when they can show the apartment. This is what i got.

Hello ,

I'm very happy that you are interested in renting my apartment, which is located at XX Orange Street New Haven, CT 06510, with two bedrooms, one living room, two bathrooms and one kitchen, square feet 1210. I really want to find a good and responsible tenant for it and i was hoping if you can send me an email with some info about you. The monthly rent is $800. Utilities : not included in the rent (maximum utilities cost/month $70).
The only problem we have here is that i already moved in a hurry with my job to United Kingdom, London and the only pair of keys are in my possession, but i'm sure we will find a way to get this deal done. Thank you and hope to hear back from you.
Regards,
XXX

Mind you the monthly rent of an apartment like this is over 1000$/month. hence why i jumped on to emailing the seller.

I wrote back:

"Dear Candi,

I am a XXX at the Hospital in new haven. I am XX years old and i am going to school for my masters currently. I would have to view the apartment first obviously before any decisions are made. When are you free to show the apartment? And what are the lease terms and who is the landlord?

Sincerely,
XXX"

Hello XXXX,

Thank you for your reply. As you already know the monthly rent is $800 with no extra taxes to pay. The money will be sent to me monthly. We will find a way we both will agree with so you can send the money to me. The apartment is empty and ready for you to move in. Obviously we need a way to complete this deal that will allow us to make sure we receive what we are after. I have found a way for us to complete the deal safely and fast, and in this way you will receive the keys in less than 2 days, if you move fast as well. The solution is provided by a company called TNT which is similar to FedEx, Dhl or UPS, which will handle the payment and delivery of the keys. I have found a procedure that will allow you to pay for the rent of the apt only after you will receive the keys it and through this way you will see it and decide if you will stay in the apt or not before I receive my payment from TNT. Please click on the link bellow to the TNT website to see how we can complete the deal safely and fast directly from the website of the company where the procedure is explained: http://www.tnt.com/country/en_...ices/timecritical.html
Let me know if you are interested and i will send you the details step by step on how this will work.

Regards,
XXX

Sounds like a scam to me...

it is, its a common scam on craigslist.

You pay and then they give you keys to an apartment that someone is currently living in and has no idea what your talking about. Thats why they dodged your question about viewing the apartment in person.

Posted the craigslist add where the adress is 85 orange st.

How can i contact the person living there to tell them someone is trying to scam the apt?

Yes a very dumb scam as who is going to move into a local place without first seeing it.

Someone tried to scam me on Craigs List once with housing, saying that I could only see the place AFTER I put down a deposit because the owners of the property didn't want random people coming to look at the place for rent.

google maps + walking

I don't see how any apartment can have two large windows in the living room and bedroom and still have a long set of windows over the sink unless there is only four apartments on every floor.

BTW- here is a Live Search of the apartment. Click on "Bird's eye" and zoom in all the way. You can see it from all sides, by clicking on the buttons to revolve your point of view.

Have you tried this?

It's this strange thing called "knocking on a door".

Apparently you do this, and the residents come and open the door and you can actually talk to them. WITHOUT A CELLPHONE!

Imagine that.

Driving 20min out of my way to walk though the inner city to get to the apartment is actually the thing i dont want to do.

Yup, same thing happened to me. I asked for the address and told them I was going to break in to "see if the washer/dryer" worked. They never responded. 😉
