So I am a poster on teamliquid.net under the alias CharlieMurphy. Recently a new guy 'charliesawanker' (with 6 posts) has trolled my blog there. And when I asked a couple of the mods who it was because they can see user's IPs (assuming it was another poster who just created a new account to insult me a few times) they all said it was ME. Ie the guy is faking my IP somehow. This is possible right? My other theory is that it's one of the mods and they are all just playing a joke on me.

I don't really care as it seems harmless and it's kind of funny. But I'm just curious how one goes about doing that. And do I have anything to worry about?

subnet meaning he is from the same area as me and has the same service provider etc?
I googled a bit and found that you can indeed fake an IP. Is that incorrect or what?

He's not going to get out of his ISP's network if he's using an IP/subnet mask that doesn't belong to the ISP's allocation range.

And even if the ISP let him out, he wouldn't be able to get anything back.

SpoR, basically there are ways to spoof an IP address, but it's useless for 2 way communications. You'd never be able to post on a forum with a fake IP address like that. Either the admins are mistaken, or he somehow is sharing your internet connection (or proxy, if you use one).

Spor while there is way to do different tricks on LAN that are under One control there is No way to do the same over the Internet.

People here a lot of stories about the Internet and capacity to do mischief. However he majority of the mischief is easily detected.

The reason that many crooks get away with the Internet trickery is Not because they are technologically superior and thus can do things that we can not, they get away because they conduct the "business" through countries that do not cooporate with International law and would not give access to FBI and similar agencies the needed information.

As for you trouble, please Notice that www.teamliquid.net is a Dutch site in Rotterdam.

While Holland is not a 3rd world country and it is part of the International community, their laws and understanding of Internet usage is different than ours (USA).

The mods were just messing with me. No one was using my IP. And as far as the site, I know it's from Holland or whatever but isn't the server hosted in Texas?

Anyways that doesn't matter. Because they were playing a joke on me. Close thread, thanks anyways
