Well, the story goes, I recommanded a friend 1.5 months ago on a 939 Opty 165 setup// DFI Ultra-D //2GB DDR// 2x RAID drives// 7900XT // etc etc. setup. Originally I asked him if he is ok with OC or not, and he ended up saying he will. So I said go for Opty 165 instead of X2 since you are OCing and Opty is the way to go for a top ended machine. But only if he OC that baby. at stock it ain't much faster than my 2.4 Sempy 64.

anyhow, it's been 6 weeks now and I gave him all the instructions to OC his rig, even stress testing procedures like prime95 etc etc. He ended up saying he's quite happy with his rig at stock 1.8 speed and justed wanted a nice stable machine. I guess I didn't realize if you never OCed before people can get uncomfy when faced with it. I mean I recommanded him the perfect OC DFI Ultra-D motherboard too! If I knew he wasn't going to OC, I'd go for a few other stable @ stock mb. Just a story, thought it was funny how my friend said he had no prob doing before and now just backed down from it.

Same exact thing happened to me. My friend is so happy with his 165/Ultra-D/7900GT he hasn't touched it.

Um.

No.

QWFT.
also note i have not OC'ed my processor (same opty 165)
there really is no need. the 165 has been sufficient so far in everything i do. maybe one fay when it becomes the bottlneck i will OC it but since 3.0 GHz p4s are still sufficient for most games i don't think that day is gonna come for some time.

A friend of mine didnt overclock untill i just told him the settings u use, now him 3200+ is running at 2.4ghz nicely. My 3200+ previously running at 2.5ghz now at stock and the diff is not really noticible.

Anyways its not like its a big deal, a 3200+ will be still quick for sometime, I mean right now having any cpu bellow 2ghz (intel) and 2000+(amd) is starting to be limited, beyond that u can still use mid range cards and get good performance, for just internet and word a p3 1ghz will work fine.

my 2.4Ghz p4 w/HT runs quite nicely. i wonder how much increase in performance i might expect from core 2 duo-E6600 more specifically.

guess i'm a member of that club too. haven't gotten around to it. bought an
Opty 175 and it's still sitting there at 2.2 GHz. nice & fast to back up files
onto though. especially from a 3.6 GHz P4. neck-snapping whip-cracking
acceleration even without OC'ing. makes it sound like a sports car.

It's implied when one buys an Opty. :p

I have a couple Opteron 165s which I bought to undervolt. They continue to run at 1.8.

Ok bah. Yeah, undervolting is another option.

That's what I was wondering. It doesn't matter what CPU you buy, you shouldn't be expected to overclock it.

There is no other point in buying the Opty over the A64 if you are not at least tweaking it with either an overclock or undervolt. In fact the A64 would be the better option, for cheaper.

There is no set rule you have to overclock, but there are better CPU's than a Opty to buy if you don't plan on overclocking...

I dont think I feel like overclocking a 4 socket Opteron Server thats being used for a backend server.

I've got an Opteron 165, and I run it stock. When I first got it, I wanted to see what it could do. I got 2.6ghz windows stable without a lot of effort ... but I don't run my system that way. I don't have any need to yet.

There are 2 reasons I chose my opty over an x2.

1) The price .... I bought mine from Dave at Flickerdown for $285.00. (I know a few other people who paid even less.) Up until January, the X2 actually ran about $30 more than the Opty 165. Therefore, when I bought mine, the opty was the better deal.

2) The extra cache.

My decision to buy the Opty had nothing to do with overclocking. The fact that its a good overclocker is a benefit ... but not the reason for my purchase. Will I overclock? Probably not ... I'll replace this system with something newer/better long before I'd have to overclock to extend the useable life of the system.

Hi. I have been trying to OC my Opty 165 on an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium and have not had much success. If anyone has some suggestions on how I can get my OC higher, I would appreciate it!

So far I have lowered the HT multiplier to 4, but did not divide my memory since it is rated at DDR500. I want to increase the HTT speed to 250 (250x4=1000MHz) which is the same as non-overclocked (200x5=1000MHz), but I can only get to 230.1 (230.1x4=920.4MHz). This also brings my memory to 460.2MHz, which is still slower than the rated 500MHz. I do not know why I cannot bring the HTT speed to 250MHz... If I could, the HT would be running at it's stock speed (1000Mhz) and the RAM would be running at exactly 500MHz which it is rated for (4x250MHz and 2x250Mhz, respectively). The only change would be to the CPU bumping the speed to 2250Mhz (2.25 GHz). I just cannot get the HTT faster than 230.1 MHZ. If you have any ideas on how I can get this higher, I would appreciate it!

Oh, I also locked the AGP and PCI multipliers to 100 MHz and 33 MHz respectively.

Asus A8N-SLI Premium
Opteron 165 (stock 1.8 GHz, OC'd to 2.07GHz)
2 x 1GB DDR500 Corsair RAM
2 x 7800GT in SLI
PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 510 SLI PSU

this post reminds me.
CPU does not determince whether you OC. mobo choices do

ok now did you try to find the max htt.
put the ram on the lowest divider.
put cpu on the lowest multi
now ramp up the htt. find its max.
