So a lady hits me as I'm turning off an interstate off ramp yesterday. picture of damage Probably a 3mph collision. Left some mars and one scratch on the bumper. Lady wants to handle the situation privately; fine with me. I told her at the scene (at her asking) that if it could be buffed, my guess is that it would cost $100-$150.

The (awesome) bodyshop I've used for major damage in the past thinks the bumper cover needs to be pulled and repainted because it's past the clearcoat. $296. This is an attractive option since it would make it look new again and take care of the other scratches previously on the bumper. However, in good faith I went to three other bodyshops. They think it can be wetsanded and buffed/polished. All three other shops said about one hour's labor at $45. It would not look new again but then again the car is 18 months old.

What do YOU do?

Get it properly fixed at the dealer. Pass her the bill. If she doesn't pay it, report to her insurance.. Easy as that.

Oh ya.. Be honest. If you're not honest, something in your life will give you cancer.

Is this through insurance claim? I think the previous scratches that got to be repaint will be charged outside of the claim as refinement.
At least that's the case with my claim. I had to pay $70 to get the whole bumper repaint.

No, it will be handled privately unless she's balks at the price I give her. She was nice about it, seemed sorry, said she didn't have the money to pay it (but she's driving a late model Prelude in ex. condition).

How about this, try the $45. If it really sucks, eat the $45 and get the fix. Let her pay in installments.

Or do nothing.

BUT, be honest. Your word is your bond. Honor before dishonesty.

I agree, it is her responsibility to fix it considering she hit you.

Treat them by their attitude. Some people can be d!cks... and I would milk them for all it's worth. I can't do the same thing to someone who was sincerely apologetic about the whole thing and took full responsibility.

If she doesn't have the money to pay for it you should go through insurance instead of handling it privately.

Karma is a crazy thing. ;) Plus you get to feel better about yourself if you don't try to milk money out of someone.

Yeah, see that's the thing that gets me. About a month ago, my fiancee was opening our car door at a restaraunt when the wind took the door and slammed it into a brand new mustang. We went into the place, found the guy via the PA system, and told him. Turned out he was a traveling business guy and it was a rental, but we expected a bill for the damage. He must have said he didn't know who did it to the car company. We haven't recieved anything about it, so that's kinda eating at me. The karma thing.

If I was her I would request several estimates and pay for the most economical. I think thats how judge Judy would handle it.

No pain and suffering should be awarded either.

You could probably fix this yourself.

contact your insurance with her insurance information. do not pass go. do not collect $200. she wants to handle it privately? fvck her. you owe her nothing, and she owes YOU. i can't believe you wasted your time going to 3 shops already, like you owe her hours of your time for the priveledge of having your car run into. sheesh. you pay your insurance to take of this crap FOR YOU. so use what you pay for. and you know she's going to make it a pain in the ass if she even does pay. she wouldn't have wanted to keep it private if she was an upstanding, honest person. and if she told you she doesn't have the money to pay for it, then she's not going to pay for it! but her insurance does have the money, so that's why you have your insurance company deal with THEM.

poll?

i would pass on the whole thing, good karma is worth more than $45

but if you want some $, take the $45

if you go for the $300+ option, then you get the BAD karma, which is worse than no karma at all
