I was always under the impression that RAM, to perform optimally, should run in sync with the CPU's base clock. My Phenom 9750 has a base clock of 200 MHz, so wouldn't that imply that any DDR2 running above 200 MHz (DDR2 400) would be wasted bandwidth?

I've ran some benchmarks, and that doesn't seem to be the case. My PC is currently running my RAM at 400 MHz/DDR2 800, and supports up to 533 MHz. Can my CPU make use of this, even though its base clock isn't 400/533 MHz?

I'm probably mixing up modern architecture with the relic of the past known as "front side bus."
