Someone Hacked My PayPal Account!!!!

In looking at recent transactions on my account today I saw a 'payment' from last week to someone I've never heard of for more than $500. All the transaction shows is a name and a yahoo e-mail address. I've contacted PayPal and they sent me an affidavit to fill out and return. I'm also contacting my credit card company.

Anyone who has had this happen to them, how big a hassle is this to clear up? Frankly, I was surprised that someone actually answered the phone at PayPal.

Should I close my account (it was suspended today) or what? Any insight or experiences would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear. I think it will be prudent to close the account, since someone can exploit it again.

Have you ever filled out one of those "We need info due to security reasons" fron Payapal?

Nope.

Funny. I always thought it was just a matter of time before something like this happened. I think I will stick with money orders from now on.:frown:

Hi dudleydocker,

PayPal has not been hacked. This actually sounds like you may have mistakenly responded to one of the many spoof emails going around that appear to come from PayPal and/or eBay.

The process to complete the refund back to you takes approximately 5-10 business days (it is very important you get the affidavit back as quickly as possible).

Many of the spoof/scam emails appear to come from the former Soviet Bloc. I would recommend using extreme discretion if someone approaches a seller that asks you to ship to one of these regions.

I didn't respond to any e-mails, or visit any webpages that even resembled PayPal. I've heard of these before this happened.

I am quite impressed with how PayPal has handled this so far actually.

This is why I don't keep money in my paypal account. And I've told my credit union to call me whenever Paypal makes a transaction on my account for me to authorize before letting it go through. :)

If it's a bank debit, then you have a false sense of security. Once the money is electronically authorized, it's gone.

one thing to really look for when dealing with any paypal issue, is the web address. Always make certain it starts with "https" where the s stands for a secure site. This will cut down on alot of potential problems when responding to paypay requests for account updates or verification.
