Someone hacked into my email

It appears someone gained access to my Gmail account and used it to steal my WoW account.

I was unable to login to my Gmail account the other day using my email address and password. When I tried to reset the password, the security question was in Chinese characters (which I translated online as "your first teacher's name"). This is of course when the first red flag went up. It would not accept my answers, so I requested a new password be sent to my secondary email address, but then I saw that had also been changed.

I was able to recover the account from Gmail, but upon logging in and checking the Trash folder, I found 4 deleted emails from Blizzard notifying changes to the password and email address for my WoW account.

I have contacted Blizzard for help to recover the account. But I'm worried about how this happened and if it can happen again. Can anyone help me understand what's going on here?

You are very lucky to have recovered the account. From what i experienced trying to help a friend with a forgotten Gmail password, its a tough cookie...besides google account security policy, the "intruder" could have locked you out permanently. Maybe you are already using a password manager for your accounts, if not i will recommend using one (Keepass, Roboform...) and doing so will help you to regulary change your passwords as well as chosing much stronger ones.
