When I say "server based specs" I mean "high end hardware". Something that might of cost 4000. I'm just curious what's the first thing you would think of using the computer for.

What would you do with it?

Install Linux? Use it as a file server? Web Server? etc?

Install FreeBSD? Use it as a development box?

Install Windows? Use it to play games?

(The above are merely possibilities)

My Tualatin 1.3 GHz box is doing just fine serving up 300 GB of lossless FLAC files.

Eventually I'll probably replace it with a shuttle or other cube, but that should cost under $1K.

I would probably sell it as I have no use for such a machine. I'd buy a nice TV and then save the rest for something useful.

hrm, 4k isn't really all that much for a server, but you'd have a pretty nifty workstation.

In all honesty, I'd install xen for the next time I need a quick box to do something stupid in.

For "server based specs" it's not going to be a gaming machine or just a workstation. I'd install Gentoo + Fluxbox (again) and run webserver, fileserver, mail server on it.

partition: windows for games, and linux for office apps/email/IM/internet when you don't have to have windows running.
