Someone gave me an old Polycom SIP 550 VOIP Phone

Polycom 550s aren't exactly "old". They can run older software, though.

You can download the new loads from Polycom's website directly. The phone can download them from a TFTP server, FTP server, HTTP server or HTTPS server. Use something simple like Starwind TFTP server or the like. TFTP is generally the easiest way to flash these things.

Provisioning, though, is another story, and I'd recommend reading through the administration guide for it.

Well, You need a PBX, if you didn't know that yet. I use asterisk.
You don't HAVE to update the firmware, but you can.
We do it with ftp, we also keep the config files for the phone on the ftp, so it grabs them too.
Your better off using the in phone menu to configure it. And NOT updating the firmware. that way you don't need FTP at all 🙂

I have a Polycom IP650 with 14line expansion sitting on my desk here for work and personal lines. Funny someone on the forums gets one of these today, had to configure like 8 of them today (Polycom 650's and 330's).
