'Real World' Goes Deep in the Heart of Texas
One's an Iraq war veteran; one's a sheltered child of
hippie-turned-deeply religious parents. One's a Pac-10 frat boy; one's
the son of a woman in rehab.
Yep, it's time for another season of "The Real World."
The long-running MTV series set up shop Austin, Texas, for its 16th
season. The seven housemates will live in a converted warehouse at the
edge of the city's downtown, not far from the famed 6th Street strip
of bars and restaurants and the University of Texas.
The cast's job this season will be to produce a documentary about the
South by Southwest festival and Austin's vibrant music scene. Their
house comes equipped with state-of-the-art editing equipment (which
will doubtless be a product-placement bonanza), and they'll work under
the tutelage of award-winning documentarian Paul Stekler ("Eyes on the
Prize II," "George Wallace: Settin' the Woods on Fire").
MTV says the heart of the 24-episode season, however, will be an
unexpected romance between two castmates that later turns tragic.
The new cast members are:
Rachel, 21, Valencia, Calif. She served four years in the Army and
logged time in Iraq as a combat nurse. She says porn star Jenna
Jameson is her hero.
Johanna, 21, Riverside, Calif. A native of Peru, Johanna came to the
United States with her family at age 11. She's studying to be a
clinical therapist, where she might be able to put her opinionated
nature to good use.
Wes, 19, Tempe, Ariz. He's a student at Arizona State University,
where he lives with his fraternity brothers. He's itching to graduate
and start his own business.
Danny, 21, Billerica, Mass. A good-looking guy who wants to break away
from his small-town roots, Danny still feels obligated to help his
father with their family business before chasing his law-school dream.
Lacey, 23, Tallahassee, Fla. Her ex-hippie parents, now devoutly
religious, kept a firm watch over the pop-culture images she was
exposed to as a kid, so Lacey is still discovering the world. She
works as a hairstylist.
Nehemiah, 19, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. He was forced to grow up
quickly as the child of a mother who's currently trying to get clean
in rehab. Although that experience has made him resourceful, he's also
searching for truly loyal friends.
Melinda, 21, Germantown, Wis. The requisite Midwestern blonde, Melinda
wants to be a dentist someday. MTV says she's a former ugly duckling
turned swan.
